Dewar vs Laverne: Dragons Lean on Defense to Bring Home State Title

EDMOND — Behind a bruising 152-yard night from Braelin Lewis and a suffocating defense that pitched three straight scoreless quarters, Dewar ground out a 14–6 win over Laverne in the state championship Thursday night at Chad Richison Stadium.

Laverne landed the first punch on its opening drive. Quarterback Keaton Cox marched the Tigers down the field and hit Trex Carnagey on an 11-yard touchdown, but the two-point try failed. Dewar answered later in the first when Lewis ripped through the left side for a 19-yard scoring run, knotting the game at 6–6 and settling the Dragons into their power-run rhythm.

The turning point came early in the second quarter after starting quarterback Peyton Kilhoffer exited with an injury. Backup Traber Jones stepped in and calmly guided an 84-yard march, leaning on Lewis and Jojo Waters to move the chains before zipping an 11-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Moore on third down. Waters added the two-point conversion to make it 14–6, and that score held the rest of the night.

From there, Dewar’s defense took over. The Dragons held Laverne to 151 rushing yards on 40 attempts and just 85 passing yards despite 19 completions, piling up 10 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. Moore stacked a game-high 12 tackles and an interception, Lewis added 10 stops from his linebacker spot, and Dewar repeatedly bowed up on third and fourth down to snuff out Tiger drives in the cold 35-degree night. With one final stop in the fourth quarter, the Dragons drained the clock and walked off with the gold ball.
