Bixby vs Owasso: Spartans Win Battle of the Burbs, Claim Eighth Straight Title

EDMOND — Behind a punishing ground game from Jayson Moll and a poised second-half response from quarterback Carson Kirby, Bixby pulled away from Owasso 31–17 on Friday at Chad Richison Stadium, winning a state championship edition of the Battle of the Burbs and securing the Spartans’ eighth straight state title in a Week 0 and championship rematch.

Bixby controlled the early stages. Kirby opened the scoring by hitting Cord Nolan on a 38-yard strike late in the first quarter, then Jack Gill cashed in a short direct-snap run to make it 14–0 midway through the second. Owasso answered just before halftime when Drew Frankenfield found Julius Wilson deep downfield for a touchdown, trimming the margin to 14–6 and giving the Rams a spark going into the locker room.

Owasso seized momentum coming out of halftime. Tah’Kari Bethel capped the opening drive of the third quarter with a 13-yard touchdown run and added the two-point conversion to tie it 14–14. Bixby steadied the ship on the next series, marching into the red zone before Bradley Thao drilled a 34-yard field goal late in the third to nudge the Spartans back in front 17–14 and flip control of the game.

From there, Bixby’s championship pedigree took over. Kirby punctuated a physical fourth-quarter drive with a 5-yard keeper to extend the lead to 24–14, and after Owasso’s Juan Razo answered with a 19-yard field goal, the Spartans slammed the door. Moll ripped off a 36-yard touchdown run in the final minute to put the game out of reach, finishing off a 434-yard offensive night and yet another December statement from the state’s dominant 6A-I program.
